I mostly agree with the anti-color coding sentiment, but I found myself doing it anyway. I have about 70 reference books that I use fairly regularly, and can pick the one I want out visually much faster than alphabetically. It may help that publisher and color/typeface are strongly correlated (yellow Springer books, what's my field?) The ones I don't use much are alphabetical by author.
