basement of horror

By 8/11/2008

so about that basement i've been talking about forever. we've laid down backerboard and put thinset on all the seams. the tile guy is coming this week to set and grout the slate tile we've picked out.

here's what we found last night:

we're going to put beadboard up on the walls, below the trim, and wallpaper the top with grasscloth.

and that will be all well and good, but then what do you do with a room with two columns in the middle of it?

its a rectangle room, with windows on each of the short sides. there are french doors and a big window on one long side, and a door to the unfinished basement part on the other long side.
what, pray tell, do we do with this? we'd like to have a couch, a TV, a drum set, a book shelf, a nintendo wii (someone needs to get me one first) and a dog down here.

  1. Not sure if this would be enough room, but you could put a sofa infront of the columns, and then insert a lower bookcase behind the sofa and between the two columns. This could also serve as a back table for drinks and light by the sofa. I've been thinking lots about columns and using them as one would use tree/lightposts to post ads. Most might not like the look of a bunch of staples, but could be neat for photographs or inspiring prints. Good luck - keep us updated!

  3. Or put the drum kit betwixt the columns. Somehow use the columns to direct traffic flow around the room. That's one of the best looking basements (even raw) I've seen.

  4. jamie - it looks great. i am partial to the idea of the bookcase between the columns..especially since you are such a fan of bookcases....
i like everything you got going on in there...can't wait to see the floor when it gets down...

  5. I am jealous of your basement! We hope to buy somewhere in Raleigh-ish in the next 6 months and we're finding basement homes hard to find in our price range.

  8. I would agree to the bookshlef in the middle of the columns, get one that fits with out a gap, make it your self time perhaps but thats even cooler and you get what you know you want. Add a swivel stand for your tv so you can have it on either side and since you have it on a book case you can place your wii (once obtained) into the bookshelf with all the games and such...good luck!!
