not so much

By 5/08/2009

it's important that i get this off my chest.

i don't think 30 rock is funny. at all.

i've tried. we've tried. week after week we keep it tuned in after the office hoping to continue the funny. but it doesn't.

the office = hilarious. laugh out loud and get miso soup on the couch.
(last night, when dwight comes out of room phyllis is in, in the wife beater, "we're going to need two able-bodied men" - miso comes out of my nose laughing so hard)

30 rock = simple and dumbed down and just not that clever.

i'm sorry, but it's how i feel.

  1. A Donkey Kong and a Sim's reference in the span of 30 seconds = very, very funny.

  2. yea that's how i felt for a long time. it's starting to grow on me now but it's defnitely not even as funny as the office.

  3. For Shame!

It's funny, I just had this conversation with my husband last night, but the reverse. I think the office (formerly my second favorite show after arrested development) has long since jumped the shark, while 30 Rock has so many quick subtle jokes. Anon is right, Donkey Kong and Sims?! It makes the funny part of my brain bleed from all the goodness

  4. No, 30 Rock is HILARIOUS. I love The Office, but I can hardly get through it waiting for 30 Rock to come on.

  5. Can we still be friends?

'Cause I think it's hilarious. We just started watching it, and I don't watch a lot of sitcoms in general, but it rocks our couch.

  6. but it's so great! the office has hardly made me laugh at all this season. and liz lemon is sooo funny! go back and watch some of the earlier episodes with dennis! they have em on hulu. you might change your mind!

  7. i have to say that both shows from time to time suck it up. but overall i think 30 rock is a waaaay better written show. i wanna punch myself everytime jim gives that insipid look to the camera. and finally they are moving away from the jim and pam show.

  8. Well, you live in Raleigh.

  9. This is the first time you've ever been wrong about anything.

    But I still love you.

  10. I could never watch the Office. It felt weird, awkward, and unreliably funny.

30 Rock makes me laugh each time, every time.

Maybe watchers of each have two different types of humor?

  11. i could not agree more, everytime i wath 30 rock it just seems stupid....

does not even compare to the office

  12. To each their own. I feel the opposite...but then that seems to be the trend here. You either like one or the other. The office is watchable, but I stay on NBC for 30 Rock.

The original Office was SCADS better btw.

  13. And I wonder who thinks The Office is funny.

  14. The biggest difference between the two shows is with The Office you get all the jokes immediately. With 30 Rock I will watch the same episode three times (in the same week) and I still find funny stuff I didn't catch the first time. Every second is packed with three different jokes.

30 Rock is the clear winner. There is only so many times Jim making a funny face at the camera can make me laugh.

But I will admit 30 Rock wasn't my fave last night.

  15. Love The Office. Do not love 30 Rock. Thanks for letting me out myself on this one. It just doesn't bring the gut-wrenching guffaws of Dwight/Michael Scott/Andy Bernard et all.

  16. I don't like either shows. Maybe it's because I encounter a-holes like that in real life?

  17. dude, you are right on. the bf and i don't laugh at all at this show anymore. we still laugh at quotes from season one though, which was so memorable. tina fey = failing...:(

  18. I think 30 Rock is the new Arrested Development - I cannot understand how someone could like one and not the other. Did you like Arrested Dev?
The Office has its moments but I think there are fewer funny moments this season than in previous years. 30 Rock gets me snorting within the first 5 minutes everytime.
But it's okay - it's not everyone's cup of tea!

  19. Me too! Me too! and I have a friend who used to write for it and I felt so bad because it just isn't funny in the least BUT I still find myself watching it every single week. Why is that?

i've only seen one episode of 30 rock, but was excited to watch it because of all the hoopla surrounding it. it was so f'ing lame, i couldn't even watch the entire thing. stupid! it was not funny but felt contrived and awful. i felt dumb for even watching it as long as i did!

i don't watch much tv at all, so was kind of excited thinking this could be a show i'd get into, but no..it sucked. i'm with you on this one!

  21. In total agreement with you.

  22. I SO AGREE WITH YOU!
*Phew* finally someone said it!! Thank you!
    Now back to the Office...

  23. i think what i find funniest about 30 Rock is the insane writing and one-liners. they are impeccable. i can see how a lot of people like The Office more, the characters are loveable and you care about them. 30 Rock humor isn't for everyone, fo sho

  24. I find 30 rock way more witty and sarcastic, which is why I enjoy it more than the office. The Office feels watered down lately, kind of tired and formulaic. I still like it, but for me it's all about 30 rock.

  25. i think the office lost it after the second season. even though i did like the dance party episde. i keep watching because i like the characters.

30 rock has it's moments, but honestly i get bored. tracy morgans character is just too dumb that it's not funny anymore.
i really only like the moments between alec baldwin and tina fey.

  26. okay okay, next you are going to tell me you didn't like Baby Mama....and that the economy is awesome... wait?

  27. Thank goodness! I thought I was all alone with this! It doesn't make me laugh at all! I am glad to know there are others out there. Haha I totally agree "not so much" Thank you isuwannnee!

  28. It is very funny!

One thing that makes it funny is that I can never remember the jokes. I usually think that shows that have non-memorable funnies are the funniest of them all.

At the risk of being like the person who tells someone who hates broccoli that maybe she needs to try it made a different way, I'd highly recommend watching 30 Rock on DVD. Season one is hilarious and so much funnier without the commercials.

  29. I love both shows but find I very seldom laugh out loud.

I think the office is *cringe* funny and so I feel I have to hold back a little.

With 30 rock it all happens so fast I have to think it about the jokes and then don't really have time to laugh in case I miss the next one. It's a vicious cycle.

  30. I love 30 Rock! It's not laugh out loud funny but just clever and entertaining. I've never really watched The Office so I can't compare.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Oh my gosh, I thought I was the only one unamused (95% of the time) by 30 Rock. I will admit that The Office is not nearly as funny this season as it has been in the past (although I still die every time I even think about "Stanley! Obama is president! You're black, Stanley!" because that was quite possibly one of the funniest moments on the show, ever), but it's still way more entertaining than 30 Rock. And I really don't think 30 Rock has anything on Arrested Development.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Really? Have you tried watching all of season 1 of 30 Rock. The one episode from this season I would ask you to try is the one about Liz's high school reunion...hilarious imo.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Sort of late to the game on this one... I love both shows, and I think 30 Rock has surpassed The Office at this point. But I would say that 30 Rock has a lot of inside jokes for 1. people in New York, and 2. people who work in TV/media. I don't mean it in an obnoxious "you just don't get it" way. I mean, they bring up things that there is no reason you would know if you weren't in one of those categories.

  34. I'm in complete agreement! I'd love to give Tina Fey a chance because, well, she's Tina Fey! but the rest of them? eh. No thank you.

(Especially Alec, I still haven't forgiven him for the phone message to his daughter.)

    ReplyDelete
  35. I agree with you - 30 Rock is not funny. I don't get it.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Neither do I. And, oh, I knew Tina Fey in college. Not a lovely human being.
