flat files
i'm constantly on the look out for old flat files that aren't $29374million dollars. they're so great for holding posters, big papers and other important things that accumulate and you don't want to get crinkled.
also coffee tables!
should you happen upon some, do the right thing: tell me.

You may have good luck checking a university salvage store - I live near a very large university and they ALWAYS have amazing stuff that they've pulled out of old classrooms and labs (like flat files, vintage wood filing cabinets, etc.) for super cheap. I even found a pair of beautiful MCM side chairs for $5.
ReplyDeleteor craigslist- there was one listed on may 31st.
ReplyDeletesummer is a good time for ncsu and duke surplus as its the time when they renovate offices, libraries and lab space.
I feel the same way, they are great!
ReplyDeleteThis is big fun. And I agree with the others...university salvage. If I hear of UNCG having one soon, I'll be sure to let you know...
ReplyDeletelove.
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU SO MUCH for helping me figure out what the heck these things are called! I, too, have been searching for these for my craft area.
ReplyDeleteIf I find something reasonable on the web, I will let you know (you do the same!)
Ciao,

they're alternatively called map cases, and asking the geology or geography depts at universities is your best bet. we geologists are very hard on that type of thing, though, so plan on some refinishing.
ReplyDeleteI blogged about it on my blog--but I had to tell you direct: IKEA has something called "ALEX" and it's pretty reasonable.
ReplyDeleteCheck it out!
I'm pretty new to your blog, but I have to say, I love it! As a brand new blogger myself, its an inspiration to see all the cool stuff you manage to find.
ReplyDeleteI've been looking for these too! I'm desperate for a place to keep all my old artwork thats currently getting ruined in an old portfolio. I've never even hear of university salvage, but it sounds like a great idea. Good luck on your search, and if you ever get a minute Id love it if you could check out my blog!
I have been reading your blog for a long time and never commented. You should know that your blog is the best around! You have great style and your blog actually has some personality. So many are so dang boring but yours cracks me up. Even the little things like the ugly doll w/ caption "don't give me that look". I was rolling! Keep up the good work.
ReplyDeleteit might be hard to share, like giving away the rum-soakedcherry at the bottom of my drink.
ReplyDeletep.s. new format is rockin
ReplyDeleteIs DC too far? I see some on our cragslist. for examples. http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/doc/bfs/1211865360.html

ReplyDeleteFound an oak flat file (as most file systems were made out of it seems like...) Still pretty pricey...

Check out my $175 find at an office surplus center. I use it for craft storage and because it is so wide, it is in my foyer.
