around the house - floral invasion
i'm gently easing into some florals in our house. brian is NOT a fan, to say the least.
it started with some custom pillows - the first step in the great pink bedroom redo of '09.
if you hate it, stay with me. this is only 24" of the room!

gorgeous purple silk welting. sump-tu-ous. the fabric is a hazelton house linen.

brian can't stand them - he had a freak out last night and said if i put them on the blog everyone was going to tell me how ugly they are and laugh at me. he's very supportive in that way.
and a towel. just 1 pottery barn towel. love the bird. he looks like a tattoo.

luxury bedroom furniture in metal and wood styles.

at the risk of being the unpopular one at the party, I'm kinda meh on the floral thing- the second one I kind of like because the combo of the towel against that dark wall is more sophisticated, but the pillows, to me...dare I say, shabby chic? Or are we still doing that?
ReplyDeleteI'm such a chicken shit too...
anonymous of course.
I apologize. You didn't ask me your opinion, but I gave it anyway. I showed a coffee table to a friend today online that I"m considering (after hunting for about 2 years) thinking that this was it and I finally found "the one", and she said, nope. don't like it.
ReplyDeleteSo, apparently I felt compelled to pass that on here. Why? I don't know, but I apologize. These words ring in my ear: "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all"
If you're liking those pillows, that's all that matters.
To be honest I don't like the pillows either, but if you do thats all that should matter. I have many things in my home that my bf dislikes and my response to this is always the same... I don't like using a small stool to get in your truck but I keep my mouth shut. 'Nough said! Rock those pillows!!!
ReplyDeleteYou know, I have some cool floral pillows that are similar - dark charcoal-y background and all. For floral, they're pretty cool. But everytime I pull them out to use/put somewhere, I end up not leaving them there because I start to think that they look too "girly" or "countrified". I want to be cool, not my Mom (even though I love her).
ReplyDeleteI even thought about pairing them with a cool geometric, but couldn't find one that I liked that worked well with them (and that I could afford!!!).
My thought?? I like the pillows, but I think paired with the pink wall they may be too girly for me. Maybe if you "butched" them up with a masculine print or something???
Sorry!
But you know what??? I really LOVE that towel! I've been considering getting the matching shams for our bedroom ever since they first graced the cover of the catalog.
Good luck with it all. You know, my hubby doesn't get what I do around the house either. In fact, I've taken to doing stuff during the week while he's away (he travels) so that when he gets home it's done and he can't gripe about it (he usually ends up really liking it!!)
I love them - and I love when a floral fight ensues.
ReplyDeletepve
I LOVE the towel & word on the chocolate wall. Floral pillows - "meh." But somehow I feel it will work because you can seem to rock anything.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to see Rachel's idea tried out ... manlinized somehow, hmmm?
Growing up in the 80's will damage a person's opinions toward floral fabrics, what with those Laura Ashley dresses and all.
ReplyDeleteI like the pillows. I kinda like that they look like Laura Ashley. I don't see them as a floral statement, but more as a quirky statement.
ReplyDeleteI'm an even bigger fan of the towel. I love that pattern. I was in heaven when I saw they also made curtains with it.
Brian needs to talk with my hubby Jon. Boys and their rules. I'm having a fight over using Chiang Mai Dragon in the house. He finally decided I'm allowed to use it, but if I make a pillow of it I can have a dragon's face showing, because the face looks like a foo dog not a dragon.
I told him to just close his eyes. I'm getting pillows made anyway.
:)
hmmmm, I like the fabric. maybe not a fan of the piping (I would have gone with black to match the background and make them a bit less girly). but they're not cringe-worthy. I bet they'd look rad on a beat-up leather chesterfield, or sort of ironic if you placed one in the seat of a pair of black Barcelona chairs.
ReplyDeletejust being honest cause I'd want my readers to do the same.
LOVE your blog! LOVE the towel. Adorable and seems like it totally fits your style. Not so much for the pillows, they almost seem out of place... I'm not one for florals, but I can always appreciate them if they work in a space, I'm just not sure this is workin'.
ReplyDeletehere's what i think...i think the pillows are good. they are bold and graphic and it's not pussy floral it's big balls floral.
ReplyDeleteNot a fan close-up but we're not getting the context of the room. Maybe they have cool friends, you know?
ReplyDeleteI like the pillows, but I LOVE that towel. Don't feel bad, my husband wouldn't like the pillows either.
ReplyDeleteyou know... at first site, I have to say I'm not feeling them. However, if you look at it in a big picture kind of way, I think it could be quite fun. LOVE THE TOWELS
ReplyDeletexo, K
Love the floral. LOVE the purple silk welt.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous pillows, awesome towel. You're right, the bird does look like a tattoo! Tres cool. I think the towel is my favorite, but I love it when you can work an unexpected floral fabric like the one on the pillows into a room.
ReplyDeleteLOVE the towel!
ReplyDeleteDeodan nailed it with the whole '80's theory, I CAN NOT look at floral OR the color mauve without nearly losing my lunch!
However, that said, I feel like this is going to work. I'm hoping you pair it with a dark brown geometric print somewhere. I look forward to seeing the end result and will withhold further judgment until then!
change that to some kind of BLACK geo print. (that is what the background of the floral is right? (old eyes...)
ReplyDeletei am liking the pillows, but there is not way husband would allow the in my home. husband probably wouldn't like the towel either - he had something against birds (thinks they're too feminine)...it's so sad!
ReplyDeleteI like the pillows. I think they actually make the room look LESS girly by offsetting the pink walls and the white bed frame. Up close they are quite floral, but, how often will your husband stare at them up close? I think they'll work really nicely in the room.

ReplyDelete"...or sort of ironic if you placed one in the seat of a pair of black Barcelona chairs."
ReplyDeleteUgh. No. Let a Barcelona chair be a Barcelona chair. No pillows. And please, no "ironic" decorating. It's the worst.
PS: The black keeps the pillows from being fruity. (And I should know; I'm a fruit.)
ReplyDeletei like the pillows. they are kinda grandma chic. but what do i know? i broke down and wore a floral polyester blouse the other day. oddly i got a lot of compliments....
ReplyDeleteI think they're beautiful.
ReplyDeleteDarling, you just tell Mr. I Suwannee that those pillows are FAB!
ReplyDeleteThat kind of loving support reminds me of when Andrew and I got in a HUGE fight about lucite furniture at dinner one night. So much so that I stormed out of the restaurant and left him at the table alone.
ReplyDeleteAhhhh, husbands.
Oh and I dig the pillows. I second the opinion that they would look even more fab paired with something really graphic and modern.
ReplyDeleteDomino declared chintz back a while ago people! :)
Will bookmark and show spouse next time he frets over the PLAIN WHITE pillows on our bed.
ReplyDeleteLove your blog.
ReplyDeleteHate the pillows. (I too lived through mauve and chintz.)
Btw, my confirmation word was"menis". Seems appropriate somehow!
I love the pillows. I would not love them if they were pinkity pink pink, but I think the darkness keeps them from being too frilly or shabby chic.
ReplyDeleteWe're picking out fabric for new throw pillows for the sofa (which also desperately needs reupholstering) and Ryan said I could pick a floral if it wasn't too busy. He pointed to two and for some reason one was "obviously" less busy. Hmm, not sure I'm clear on his vision... I may go geometric to avoid that argument. I'm still fighting for pink walls in the bedroom.
Well, I really like them. I'm working on a big balls floral for the bathroom shower curtain, but thought Wilkes was going to SHIT HIMSELF when I showed it to him. You just tell Brian thats what he gets for the hermit crab.
ReplyDeletei think the pillows rock!! because its big balls floral (as my fav and best put it best) and the purple welting is nothing a laura ashley devoted hag would do. so they should stay!

ReplyDeleteThat floral print? I think I had the exact same one in my room growing up as the curtains and bedpread, except mine was on a white background, not black. I love florals. It's time to bring back the femme!
ReplyDeleteDon't pair them with a geometric print. You'll just end up with pattern overload and a throbbing headache. For a pairing, go for a nice solid color. Something cool and calm.
ReplyDeleteLove those pillows, and the piping! Just checked out the Hazelton House site - their fabrics are amazing! No offense to anyone, but there's nothing Laura Ashley or Shabby Chic about them. Bet the room is going to be beautiful and I hope you show it to us when it's finished! AND I hate to say this, but for the most part, what do our husbands know about interior design?! Enjoy them!
ReplyDeleteHmmm. I'd have to see the rest of the room to really judge...
ReplyDeletei absolutely LOVE the pillows. i would use them in my home in a skinny minute :) not your avg floral, somewhat vintage-y. very refreshing to see something different every once and a while!
ReplyDeleteThey look awesome! I've been having a hard time finding curtains for my house too and I wish I could just have yours, I think they would be perfect. Beautiful room!
