alright, let's think

By 3/04/2009

our bedspread is too short.

has anyone else had this problem with queen size comforters/spreads? it's either way way too long on the sides, and too short on the ends, or if you flip it, it's not long enough on the sides.

so i'm going to remedy this. i'm going to put it on so it's long enough to tuck under at the end (leaving the sides too short) and i'm going to sew a border onto the sides. maybe about 1 foot wide.

there's the spread in the middle. do any of the fabrics around it jump out at you as being a good match for the border?

  1. When I was getting my bedding for my queen size, I thought I would have this problem, so I got a King size instead. It looks great...just right!

  2. What a great idea! I LOVE the top left bamboo print. Very, very nice!

  3. I like the bottom-middle for a softer look or the bottom-left for a bolder look. Good luck!

  4. I have the same problem! I like the middle left (brown/cream stripes).

  5. I'm going with the bamboo print too!

  6. i have a king sizer and have the same problem. and seeing as king sizers are the last in the short line of options i would have to resort to sewing a border too. great idea! i am partial to the stripes for yours. either one, but i think the brown might be a smidge more interesting. either that or the red might read as too girly.

  7. Make that two for bottom middle.

  9. another for bottom middle.
or for a masculine touch, the stripes.

  10. I'm liking the bamboo prints. Either of them.

And this is ingenious. I have the same problem with my duvet covers...

  11. What's the rest of the room like? dark wood? light wood? But flying blind, I vote top left or bottom right!

  12. What a great idea! I have the same issue and am always left feeling that my bed looks sloppy!

I seem to be in the minority here, but I like the bottom right. But, I always tend towards more color rather than less.

  13. Great idea! I wish I had the sewing chops for a project like this.

I like the bottom middle or the top right. Bottom middle seems to be more of a consensus

  14. the scale of the bottom middle pattern isn't quite right with that bedspread (I own the spread too) the middle right is the most interesting pairing, I like it best. Top middle is a nice combo, but a little boring.

  15. i think the top left would look great!

  16. Situation indeed! Fab knockoff of Clarence House's 'Flowering Quince' -- I say make wide border in solid black wool felt. Geometric bordering floral strikes me as a little jarring. But I'm guessing there's chocolate brown in the room? Then I'd do solid brown felt. If you did any geometric a black/cream or bbrown/cream stripe would be ideal. Tell us what you pick!!

  21. Same problem here. I guess it is because mattresses are so GIANT now. The red basketweave or red stripe. I like Nick's suggestion for black wool, but I think it would be perpetually covered with lint and schmutz.

  22. i think the any of the three in the bottom right would look fantastic.

  23. Personally, I like the chainlink pattern that is directly to the right of the bedspread fabric!

  24. Bottom middle. Not that you need another opinion because just seeing all the different votes people have sends me into a conflicted textile turmoil...

Love the dog photo idea too. RK's mantle has always intrigued me, but the dog idea seems so "I don't take myself too seriously".

Hope life is good down there in the south!

  25. You don't know me from dick but I'm going to give you my two cents anyway, since I live right next door to you in Durham (that oughta count for something, right). I say the black and white dove print in the bottom left hand corner. Good luck! (and just for the record, I always thought "suwannee" but spelled swaney. Who knew?)

  26. Solid color; maybe not felt, but rather a flat sheet fabric.

  27. The middle left. It looked grey to me (so if it were available in grey, that would work too), but even as brown, I like it best.

  28. Great eye...I love them all expect the one at the bottom right of the screen with/fan shapes. All the rest work for me. I think its just a matter of how bold of a contrast that your looking to achieve with everything else in the room.

  29. I love this idea....and I love that middle-on-the-bottom print :-)

  30. bottom middle. you want the scale to be smaller than the main print of the spread.

  31. bottom right FOR SURE. its the hippest/most contemporary choice. the rest are all kinda fussy.

  32. As the descendant of a long line of north Alabama sharecroppers, may I tell you that here it is, "Well, I swan!"?

Anyway, if your comforter was a kimono, the cuffs and placket would definitely be the fish-scale pattern. I say edge it with that AND add an "obi" stripe across the middle with a fabulous throw. (But then I always like to have some vaguely legit sounding reasoning for doing every damn thing.)

  34. I agree with the bamboo print in the top right corner...gives me a good feeling to see it alongside the Asian flower design of the spread.
