a sad tale of halloween, BUT with hope, and pumpkin DIYs
i'm just real torn about halloween. when brian meares and i first set up shop as real homeowning grown-ups, we'd hang ghost lights in the shrubs, serve soup in carved out pumpkins and we'd have a party where he'd dress like hugh hefner because he'd take any excuse to walk around in a silky robe flanked by girls. my friends and i would heat up cider with bourbon and wait on the sofa, shrieking when every little person approached the doorbell.
but now, we usually board up - lights off, door locked... sometimes even leaving all together. i dunno - the grinch of halloween got us. and i admit, i'm a bit afraid of little people. i don't know what to say to them. a friend gave me some great advice once for conversing with kids: just ask them if they like sharks. Yes, then say 'you're so brave!'. No, then say 'they are scary, aren't they!'. it's served me well.
here's the upside of this story. i bought three pumpkins yesterday. there's a tiny halloween size crack opening up in me to let the glowing pumpkin light through. last night i grazed pinterest for my favorite pumpkin DIYs - now i just need to decide which one to keep this holiday spirit burning bright.
gold dipped // ombre // marbled // painted // tribal // vase // glittered // color blocked // rainbow studded // puff painted

ReplyDeletethat shark trick could even work on adults! brilliant!
ReplyDeletei don't go all-out for halloween. i'm creeped out by zombies & gore, but here is one little bit of halloween magic that i LOVE: (keep in mind, my kids are 19, 14, and 8, so i've been doing this for decades now)... taking my kids door to door, after dark, in my own familiar neighborhood. knocking on each door, and it's the one night of the year that every single neighbor is expecting us. they swing open the door with candy & cozy peeks at their home & the smell of warm yummy stuff on the stove. i come home feeling like we live in a snug little village. and after all those home-impressions, i see my own home with new eyes. it somehow seems magically new & special.
maybe you should take some of your new shark-friends trick-or-treating? ; )
One of each but something about the ombre seems very Furbish!

ReplyDeleteOh halloween. I'm looking forward to that day.
ReplyDeleteThe shark question is awesome. Kids are just little people who, for the most part, haven't been jaded by life.
